Three eighteenth century punch cutters led the way out of the old style tradition toward the high contrast and vertical emphasis of the modern style, hallmark of nineteenth century industry. The work of John Baskerville in Birmingham and Pierre Simon Fournier in Paris is well known. The types of Johann Michael Fleischman are less familiar.
