CUSTOM FONTS Font Bureau was founded in 1989 to serve the emerging needs of microcomputer-based magazine and newspaper publishers seeking unique typographic identities. Font Bureau specializes in custom type design, having outfitted publications, corporations, and device manufacturers with award-winning and cost-saving fonts.There are three major motivations for commissioning a custom font: aesthetics, technology, and licensing. First, there is the need to stylistically stand apart from the crowd. Font Bureau designers have experience reviving historic sources, expanding existing families, and creating wholly new designs to fit art directors’ needs. Second, changes in technology demand new type, whether for resolution migrations in today’s screen-based world or by updating designs to fit new font formats and software requirements. Finally, some licensing situations make commissioning a new design more cost effective than licensing existing fonts.
